Dr Andrew Apel completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane, then undertook a two year Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada from 1992-1994.
He has over 20 years experience in treating medical and surgical conditions of the anterior segment of the eye. He has published peer reviewed journals, lectured internationally and teaches at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. His special interests include cataract and refractive surgery involving the implantation of spherical, toric and multifocal lenses. Other refractive surgical procedures involve insertion of implantable contact lenses and laser surgery.
His surgery for corneal disease includes full thickness corneal transplantation and is a leader in performing the DMEK procedure. Keratoconus patients are monitored in the Keratoconus Care Clinic with Riboflavin Crosslinking utilised in progressive cases.
Dr Apel is the founder of The Eye Health Centre where he practices with the assistance of five optometrists who also provide technical expertise in contact lens fitting. The Eye Health Centre also caters for speciality treatment of dry eye syndrome utilising the E-eye IPL treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
He is a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAO) for CASA and examines the ocular health of pilots, air traffic controllers and Defence Force personnel. He is a Senior Visiting Ophthalmologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and is involved in the training of future Ophthalmologists.
Dr Apel has practices in Brisbane City and Ipswich.
